These have been dark days for Villarreal.
Almost 11 months ago to this day, they were preparing to contest a Europa League semi-final against FC Porto and entertained realistic hopes of pipping neighbouring Valencia to the final automatic Champions League spot.
Their domestic campaign had seen them push Barcelona as close as just about anybody, and by taking the game to the Catalans too.
Their little and little forward line of Giuseppe Rossi and Nilmar were scoring for fun, with the supply line formed by Borja Valero, Cani and Santi Cazorla as attractive as anything found outside that of the Champions.................
